How long should Home Business Owners / Network Marketing companies keep tax records?

A question often asked by professionals network marketing is: "How long should my tax return and taxes?"

The IRS generally has 3 years to audit you and your company, starting from the date of the file your return. So, make that 3 years is the absolute minimum time to keep your tax records. However, should your return to serious tax reporting errors, the IRS can go back 6 years.

State tax agencies can check your records, and their statuesRestrictions vary. Taking into account all laws, my recommendation is maintained for your tax records for at least 7 years. This includes not only a copy of the return, but also costs receipts, customer invoices, bank statements, appointment books, travel books, keep them all!

If space in your "home office" do not allow 7 or more years of record storage set up you may want a room of your house for the long-term storage of documents. Areas like the corner of your basement, attic orGarage work best. I recommend filing tax returns and documents in plastic storage containers, the time is not weaken or are susceptible to moisture while, as opposed to cardboard file boxes. Organize your tax records for a year with the latest in the front. Label each container, which makes it easier to locate files later.

Why all this trouble saving old tax documents? Since the day may come, years from now, if an IRS agent asks for the security of documentation on tax incentivesDeduction you claimed. The best way to fulfill this request, and increase the chances to justify the deduction, is to consider these tips:

• Keep your records for seven years, so you prove deductions to which you are entitled by law.
• The burden of proof lies with you, not the IRS agent, so be prepared to make your case.
• To the IRS, each and every taxable income ... unless it is at its exception list.
• To the IRS, noCost is a deductible expense, unless the IRS code addresses the exceptions.
• Keep your information is accurate, complete and current.
• do not think that the day to day hurdles growing your network marketing business an acceptable excuse for printing records of the "back burner"
• Obtain and use a business credit card or one or more personal card exclusively for business use.
• Open a business checking account designed exclusively forbusiness use.
Home entrepreneurs should have a copy of IRS Publication 583, "Starting a business and storage", for more details on IRS reporting obligations.
