Why didn't I try this before?
About two years ago, I set up a Raid 1 array on my home desktop so that I could avoid losing data if I dropped a drive. It worked fine until I upgraded to an XFX motherboard which apparently doesn't support onboard RAID (of course the sales literature says it does). After messing around with the software-based XFX RAID for a few months, and having a couple near misses with my data - I gave up on that idea.
That's when I found the DNS-323. Bought two brand new WD drives to put in it and it took about 15 minutes to set it up with RAID 1. Works great, so far - I backed up about 150gigs of files and photos onto it, and set up my printer on it, so I no longer have to move the usb cable between my laptop and desktop. I haven't tried any of the other features yet. Also I didn't use the included backup software - I just use the free syncback product.
My only complaints are minor. First it's not obvious how to change the printer name on the device - I'm sure there's a way to do it, but the manual doesn't say anything about it. Second, the blue Led light is a bit annoying and bright. I'm sure they did that for marketing purposes, so folks can show off their equipment, but I'd prefer it to be less conspicuous.
